Does a dust mask protect you or help protect you from fumes?

like when burning thingsDoes a dust mask protect you or help protect you from fumes?
No. It protects from airborn particles like sawdust or pollen, etc...

For fumes, look into a respirator, you can get them 'air supplied' or non air supplied, depending on your application.

When burning... a dust mask will protect you from particles rising in the heat, but not gases with a chemical compound on it.Does a dust mask protect you or help protect you from fumes?
No. Believe it or not, a dust mask is designed to protect you from dust particles in the air. If by fumes you mean 'noxious' gases, then no, a dust mask won't protect you from breathing them in. I wouldn't take the risk of burning plastics or other materials that give off noxious gases with just a dust mask for protection, not that you should be burning these things in the first place (there are stringent laws in many countries that forbid you to burn a whole range of materials).

You might be looking for a respirator, which protects you from fumes.
