Only if you are working in a desert. The types of illness you are asking about are virus'. You would need a Hepa Filter pack to protect from virus'. Big %26amp; bulky, and wouldn't protect you from many types of illness. Not to mention that people wearing Hepa type filters brings to mind bio terrorism.
Wait, that would work! They'd see you in a gas mask type respirator with Hepa filter cartridges and promptly evacuate the building. Sorry, but a dust mask is inadequate.
